ARMENTEROS-AMAYA, Mabelin; HERNANDEZ-RODRIGUEZ, Robier  e  SILVERA-SEGURA, Kenia. Integral characterization of the milk production chain in four provinces of Cuba. Intrinsic factors and lessons learned from the study (II). Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2020, vol.42, n.3  Epub 01-Dez-2020. ISSN 2224-4700.

The production chain approach allows the improvement of the quality of milk, as it reflects the relationships between actors in a system of production, processing, marketing and market access. This is a key issue in all the discussions that take place both at national and international levels, including public health. That is why it is necessary to implement programs for the organization and improvement of the production chain that fit the conditions of the current Cuban context. The objective of this study was to identify the intrinsic factors and general findings of the diagnostic process in milk chains in the Cuban provinces of Mayabeque, Matanzas, Villa Clara, and Cienfuegos, within the framework of the international project "Vía Láctea". The methodological tools used were based on the participatory model, based on both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The analysis was aimed at the internal aspects of the chain, with a characterization of the direct and indirect actors, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. The conclusion is that the main actors in the chain have a long history and vocation in the dairy sector, showing a commitment to change. However, there are strong weaknesses limiting the performance of the chain. In addition, lessons learned and general proposals for strategies to strengthen the milk production chain in these areas were presented.
