Resumen

GARCIA BAEZ, Román  y  SANCHEZ DIAZ, René. Today's Access to Higher Education, and College Completion Rates by Social Group and Skin Color in Cuba. UH [online]. 2018, n.285, pp.232-248. ISSN 0253-9276.

In this paper, objective reasons why social differences and skin color continue influencing the access to higher education, and college completion rates are examined, based on the political-economic category "social consumption funds". Objective reasons why less-favored social groups are the ones who, paradoxically, don't take full advantage of the opportunities to study given by the Cuban Government are particularly emphasized. It is held the view that the main differences in the access to higher education are between potential candidates from families whose members perform mostly intellectual labor, and the ones from families whose members perform mostly manual labor, and not between whites, blacks, and persons of mixed race, although there is an organic correlation between them. New modes of study and other steps taken by the Ministry of Higher Education, which will help less-favored social groups, are explained. Other ways of achieving social justice in the realm of higher education are considered.
