Resumen

HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ, Jorge. The United States ‒ Social Classes and Contradictions (Notes on Polarizations, Differentiations and Cleavages). UH [online]. 2021, n.292, 11.  Epub 05-Jun-2021. ISSN 0253-9276.

In the United States, consensus and political contradictions coexist alongside a clear socioeconomic polarization on a class basis. At the partisan and ideological level, the differentiations between Democrats and Republicans, as well as between liberals and conservatives, often understood as polarizations or conflicts between left and right, are not such. To that end, this article explores the heuristic limitations of such approaches and assesses the theoretical potential of the cleavage concept. In conclusion, it argues the advantage of its use to reflect dialectically the essence of the alluded contradictions and to overcome the limitation of their denomination as polarizations and of the distinctions between left and right, in the analyzed examples.

Palabras clave : capitalism; consensus; ideology; parties; politics.
