The article studies the scientific trajectory of the theory of international relations during a century of academic existence (1919-2019). It goes back to its earliest antecedents from the European Ancient and Modern Ages with the aim of demonstrating the scientific character of a discipline fundamentally focused on the analysis of the structure, forms of organization, processes and dynamics of the system of international relations, with emphasis on the political aspects. In the elaboration of the work, the historical and political methods were used, as well as the Marxist conception of history to understand that the theory in question constitutes an ordering of international phenomena to identify causes and effects, to describe, explain and, as far as possible in the social sciences, to predict these phenomena.
