This article provides a brief review of the theoretical treatment of foreign policy. To this end, different conceptualizations of foreign policy and its link with the national interest, as a fundamental part of the formulation and execution of foreign policy, are presented. The debate between the fundamental theoretical currents in the discipline of international relations that serve as a theoretical platform for foreign policy as a relatively autonomous object of study is analyzed. Finally, the different theories on the causes of the shaping of foreign policy are examined.
