CHEONG SARMIENTO, Liannet. The expression of obligation and its strategic use in the oratory of José Martí. UH [online]. 2023, n.298  Epub 01-Dez-2023. ISSN 0253-9276.

One of the most captivating facts for José Marti's oratory students continue being a way in which the speaker is able to persuade and to call for action. From the identification of linguistic resources such as the imperative mood or the verbal periphrasis that express obligation, emerged the need to enquire about the speech strategies used by the Apostol for not being impose in a direct manner to the audience. In this way, an analysis of the expression of obligation was made throughout twenty-one speeches still preserved in their total integrity with the aim to determine the form and function of the modalizers that express obligation. This modality was assumed from the enunciative perspective, which allowed to relate the modalizers with the construction of the enunciator subject image´s and the creation of discursive strategies. (Martinez 2007, 2015). Several methods as the observation, as well as discourse analysis from a pragmatic perspective, were used. Results show that modalizers constitute a path to stablish the ethical principles and expose the enunciator's attitude towards an external normative systems that regulate the "must be" “must do". Like this, a reliable ethos is constructed that supported in several resources to achieve adherence, without imposition, as part of the same collectivity.
