This paper presents some criteria on innovation processes at universities. Over the last few years, numerous experiences thereof gained by universities have been shared in order to make higher education more flexible, find ways to integrate these with production and market, integrate technologies into teaching-learning process, with the aim of making universities more able to contribute to the development of societies which they belong to. However, it is stated that universities still have to examine their responsibility for models of society and development, and effects of these on the exclusive global market, and environment. Innovation at universities is also analyzed in order to make improvements in people's quality of life. On the basis of experiences gained by the Salesian Polytechnic University, some criteria for establishing an alternative paradigm of innovation at universities are presented, with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) being included and market forces taken into account.
