Resumen

YILORM BARRIENTOS, Yasna  y  ACOSTA MORALES, Haydeé. Neoliberalism and the Process of English Language Teaching and Learning in Chile: A Critical Analysis of this Process in Vulnerable Sectors of the Chilean Society. Rev. Cubana Edu. Superior [online]. 2016, vol.35, n.3, pp.125-136. ISSN 0257-4314.

The neoliberal education model in Chile has been harshly questioned by students, who have rebelled against competition, selection, and segregation of which they are the victims since preschool education; this phenomenon is known as educational apartheid. The process of English language teaching and learning is not exempted from this problem. All tests given by the Ministry of Education nationwide suggest that most socially vulnerable students don't understand simple sentences in English language. This paper critically analyzes the effect of social vulnerability on the process of English language teaching and learning. Finally, it has been reached the conclusion that ways English is taught and learned have to be urgently changed because today's dominant teaching practices are direct results of the prevailing system.

Palabras clave : social disadvantage; didactics of english language; discrimination in education.
