The requirements for students majoring in mathematics are very difficult to satisfy due to the high level courses they need to take even in their first academic year. There is a need to change the didactics of mathematics to achieve a balance between education, content, and training of future professionals. This paper presents a didactic method to develop mathematical understanding in first-year students during teaching-learning process, and the theoretical and methodological framework for designing didactic procedures based on a comprehensive diagnosis of mathematical understanding, in accordance with didactic principles, and training goals at today´s Cuban universities.
