For the last twenty years, the formation and development of research competencies have been increasingly promoted in Latin American higher education, with professional competencies forming separately on occasion. Do both kinds of competencies take form actually separately, or are they closely related? In this paper, professional and research competencies are examined, as well as their dialectical relation.
