The present study’s main aim is to provide an approach to the functions and characteristics of the university's academic assistant in Chile. For the analysis four norms from different Chilean university programs will be considered and also one experience of the regulation in a Mexican university, in which its possible to identify at least three important categories: requirements/level of formation, academic functions and contractual relation. From the analysis made, it was demonstrated that the assistants are found at peripheral positions in relation to the academic program. Furthermore, it was concluded that there is a general precarization of labor characterized by the labile nature of the recruitments. However, from the perspective of the dynamic of scientific and disciplinary development, assistants are part of a strategic link in the academia, in a way that they provide continuity to the scientific discourse and they also acquire different types of capitals for the attainment of prestigious positions in the university.
