Higher education of the future, relevant and internationalized, as a public good and universal right, the support of public policies and the commitment to equity and quality for the benefit of society and the Sustainable Development Goals is a very topical topic. The concepts, principles, roadmaps, vision, and thematic axes that are defined in the World Conferences on Higher Education, the Regional Conferences that precede it, demand contextualization to each region, country, territory, and institution. The objective of this paper is to reflect on the background and future impact of higher education, internationalization from the regional perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the necessary integration of higher education systems to face the poor positioning of most universities and its impact on the levels of development in the region.
