ISSN 0258-5936.

The investigation was developed from 1996 to 2002 in Coffea canephora Pierre var. Robusta plantations on Cambisols in two regions: La Alcarraza and Tercer Frente, with the objective of determining N requirements as well as some soil chemical (% organic matter, pH) and microbiological (biological breathing) indicators. Growing doses of N fertilization were evaluated depending on crop stage that ranged between 0 and 200 kg.ha-1. A randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. For the first year of plantation (1997), a dose of 60 kg N.ha-1 guaranteed appropriate canopy diameter growths, whereas during the second year (1998), N requirements increased and were necessary 72 and 90 kg.ha-1 to reach the top stable canopy diameter of coffee trees in La Alcarraza and Tercer Frente, respectively. A dose of 90 kg.ha-1 guaranteed stable yields since the second harvest, with values of 1.25 to 1.30 t coffee berries.ha-1. From the third harvest, N requirements increased and were necessary 100 kg.ha-1 to achieve yields of 1.30 to 1.36 t coffee berries.ha-1 in Tercer Frente and 1.48 to 2.00 t in La Alcarraza. The recommended N doses for C. canephora for the establishment and production stage did not have any negative effect on the biological breathing, organic matter and soil pH.

Palabras clave : Coffea canephora; nitrogen; biological breathing; microbial indicators; pH; soil organic matter.
