This work was developed in order to know if there exists any heat tolerance variability in a representative sample of ex situ-preserved tomato (Solanum L. section Lycopersicon subsection Lycopersicon) germplasm from Cuban collections and to identify the most tolerant accessions to be used in plant breeding programs. Thus, the following statistical parameters were calculated: average, range and coefficient of variation of cell membrane thermostability (TMC) and cell viability (VC), tested at tissue level, as well as of the characters and tolerance criteria: potential fruit set (FP), fruit set under stress conditions (FE), stress geometric fruit set (FGE), tolerance (TOL), stress susceptibility index (ISE), stress tolerance value (ITE), and relative tolerance index (ITR), evaluated at plant level. It was also assessed the relationship existing among them, by means of estimating coincidence index of the best and worst accessions, and the correlation between them. It was proved that tissue-level evaluations, especially TMC, had high rates of coincidence and positive correlation with tolerance criteria at plant level, mainly with ITE or FGE, determining 18 accessions, which were coincidentally classified as heat-tolerant through every indicator evaluated, that are proposed as parents in plant breeding programs for heat tolerance in the crop.
