Abstract

The existence of 33 Culicidae species from 16 different genera was reported in Petén district (Northern region of Guatemala) as a result of entomological exploration performed from 1999 to 2001. The distribution of species was not homogeneous in the whole territory, being Culex genus the most abundant in species and Anopheles genus the most spread. The health area named Petén Norte had the highest variety of Culicidae with 93,9% of the reported total amount. Several captured insects have a great health relevance since they participate in the transmission of important human diseases. In the Northern region of Guatemala, malaria shows the highest incidence whereas a remarkable increase in Stegomyia aegypti spread towards non-urban environments has been observed. The causes of the presence and distribution of Culicidae family in Petén district will be analyzed in future research works.
