Abstract

OBJECTIVE: it is vital for the Aedes aegypti control to find out the present status of susceptibility to insecticides that are being used in order to maintain the sustainability of strategies for the application of insecticides. METHODS: three Aedes aegypti strains from Cerro, Plaza and Boyeros municipalities in the City of Havana, trapped in their immature stages as larvae and pupas from several vector populations coming from various health areas, were used. Bioassays were performed in line with the World Health Organization methodology to determine susceptibility/resistance (or both) in larvae and adult vectors. Those insecticides presently used in the country were included, namely, cypermethrine, lambdacyalothrine and chlorpiriphos. RESULTS: all the three strains were susceptible to the evaluated insecticides in larval stage whereas they were resistant to pyrethroids in adult stage except for organophosphate insecticide known as chlorpiriphos. CONCLUSIONS: susceptibility found in larval bioassays to cypermethrin, lambdacyalothrin and chlorpiriphos is due to the fact that these products are not used for this end in the country. Adult vector susceptibility to chlorpiriphos in our study is attributed to the little use of this insecticide to eliminate adults in the intensive stages of the eradication campaign during the last five years. However, cypermethrin and lambdacialothrin have been the choices to fight adult vectors in outbreaks. The similar behaviour of these strains could be the result of implementing the same controlling policy throughout the country, since the eradication campaign uses the same type of insecticides and treatment in intensive phases.
