Abstract

FUENTES BELTRAN, Lisandra et al. The gender approach in the evolution of HIV/AIDS prevention and control strategies in Cuba. Rev Cubana Med Trop [online]. 2019, vol.71, n.3, e375.  Epub Mar 03, 2020. ISSN 0375-0760.

Introduction:

Strengthening the HIV AIDS prevention strategy in Cuba includes mainstreaming a gender strategy as a fundamental approach to actions.

Objective:

Characterize the incorporation of the gender approach in the evolution of HIV/AIDS prevention and control strategies in Cuba.

Methods:

A qualitative study was conducted from January to June 2015. Triangulation was performed of data obtained from official documents of the Cuban HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Program and from interviews with experts. Analysis was based on an inductive and deductive strategy supported by the software QSR Nvivo10.

Results:

Three key moments were identified in the incorporation of a gender approach into the national response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Cuba. Important elements include the work with women and with men who have sex with men as vulnerable groups, and the eventual incorporation of gender initiatives in support of the educational component of the national strategy.

Conclusions:

Incorporation of the gender perspective into HIV/AIDS prevention policies sheds light on the mechanisms that reproduce gender gaps and makes it possible to devise concrete actions aimed at reducing inequality.

Keywords : gender; HIV; AIDS; prevention; Cuba.
