Resumen

CARBALLO MARTINEZ, Rosario et al. La hipertensión y la obesidad en el niño como factores potenciales de riesgo aterosclerótico en el adulto joven . Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 1998, vol.17, n.2, pp.173-178. ISSN 0864-0300.

320 obese children and adolescents aged 11-14 years, treated by the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department of the Teaching Pediatric Hospital in Cerro municipality, were studied with the aim of proving the eventual relation between hypertension and obesity that are known atherogenic risk factors. The blood pressure of all the subjects was measured according to the international standards. The obese group was compared with a group of children of the same age and sex whose weight was considered to be adequate for the age. This group was the control group. It was observed that no obese patient of the age groups showed a mean blood pressure value exceeding the standard deviation of the control group mean value. Nevertheless, 34 hypertensive obese children, 13 females and 21 males were found; some moderately obese and others severely obese. No significant difference was found in terms of sex or age, but the difference was significant in terms of obesity development time. It should be pointed out that all the obese patients presented a central obesity. The percentage of parents with hypertension history was higher in hypertensive than in non-hypertensive obese patients.
