Resumen

FUENTES LORENZO, Jorge L. Respuesta SOS en E. Coli. Test de inducción de genes SOS como ensayo de mutagenicidad. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 1999, vol.18, n.1, pp.5-9. ISSN 0864-0300.

The particularities of the SOS response in E. coli cells are presented and a description of the types of damage inducing such a response is made. Some aspects connected with the regulation of the RecA/Lex A circuit, as well as with the signal inducing the response are also dealth with. According to the updated bibliography on this topic, the functions of the main genic products of this response, particularly RecA and UmuC and D, during the restoration of replication are summarized. A model that explains the phenomenon of SOS mutagenesis in E. coli is discussed, too. Some evolutive considerations of SOS mutagenesis in bacteria are made according to Cairns' evolution model. The specificities of the SOS induction genes tests and its usefulness in the evaluation of genotoxic effects and in the search and study of action mechanisms of antimutagenic and radioprotective substances, or both, are explained.
