CONCEPCION ALFONSO, Ángel R et al. Evaluación de extractos de algas marinas, con actividad antioxidante y reorganizadora de la fibra colágena. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2001, vol.20, n.1, pp.6-11. ISSN 0864-0300.

Five seaweed extracts from the Cuban shoreline were used to assess their antiphotoaging capacity through biochemical and histopathological techniques. The superoxide dismutase activity of extracts was evaluated in vitro and one of them proved to have good enzymatic function, so it may be infered that it acts as a cell protector against the occurence of free-radicals or free-radical forming substances like superoxide radical. The activity of the best of the extracts was SOD IC50=1,71 mg/mL. A histopathological study of the skin of mice irradiated with UV light was carried out to disrupt collagen and elastic fibers as well as other skin components responsible for skin aging. The finding was that in animals irradiated and treated with seaweed creams, collagen fibers reorganized, and "solar elastosis" and epidermic acanthosis decreased. Also antimflammatory effects were observed. It was concluded that the studied extracts had antiphotoaging capacity, therefore it was suggested that the best of such extracts be used in the preparation of creams to treat wrinkles
