Interferons are part of a family of proteins that have various biological effects. In particular interferon is involved in the inflammatory process and the production of reactive oxygen species. Once this cytosine is activated, it induces the generation of mediating molecules and these in turn activate a group of cell which are recruited at the site of the inflammatory process. Among the types of activated cell, we may find the macrophage where reactive oxygen species such as nitric oxide (NO) are produced as a result of the inductive effect of interferon on the nitric oxide synthase enzyme. The speed of this reaction depends on the tetrahydrobipterin co-factor where the limiting enzyme is coded by an interferon-activating gene. On the other hand, the enzyme modulating the production of nitric oxide by the nitrogen supply is also regulated by this cytosine
