The shark cartilage powder is a widely used natural product to which a number of biological actions have been attributed. This paper set forth a literature review. Obviously, the shark cartilage has particular structural features that make it different from other Vertebrata´s cartilages and the man´s cartilage. Analgesic and inhibitory actions of angiogenesis have been studied and tested. Over the last 3 years, it has been demonstrated that shark cartilage glycoaminoglucans show modulating action on the growth and development of neurons in tissue culture. Other researched biological actions are: anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, immune response-activating and anti-lipemia actions. It is acknowledged that Cuba was one of the first countries to use shark cartilage in the supplementary therapy for advanced refractory cancer. However, it is required that its use for therapeutic purposes be based on clinical assays because such assays have not been conclusive so far
