The evidences of the relationship existing between the inflammatory periodontal disease and the systemic affections, such as atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarction and lung diseases, were approached. This disease affects the tissues supporting the tooth and even though its cause is mainly infectious, it is recognized that the response of the host to the bacterial attack plays an important role in the evolution of the disease. Although this inflammatory phenomenon is apparently local, diverse studies state the possibility of participation of the oxidative stress.
