A review was made on a great deal of theories explaining the nature of aging that have been proposed during this century. These theories go from the simple theory of wasting or deterioration to the widely discussed theory error catastrophe. Due to the multicausal nature of aging, it is unlikely that a unique theory may explain all the aging mechanisms.
