A review of pre-eclampsia, one of the most significant health problems in human pregnancy that complicates approximately 6 to 8 % of pregancies and causes fetal growth retardation, infant morbidity and mortality, premature births and maternal death, was conducted Recent studies have reported that there is an unbalance in the oxidative status, an increase of the oxidant systems and a decrease of the antioxidant systems in women with pre-eclampsia, and that this factor may contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. The nitric oxide is a vasodilative factor and a platelet anti-aggregant that may play an important role on inducing hemodynamic changes during pregnancy. The biochemistry of nitric oxide and its possible interactions with other free radicals was dealt with. Studies conducted with rats show that pregnancy is associated with a rise in the production and response to nitric oxide. Contradictions have been found among humans as regards the role of nitric oxide in the maternal adaptation to pregnancy. This suggests that nitric oxide may be one of the multiple systems acting in the maintenance of the symbiotic relation between mother and fetus. However, the function of each system may be genetically determined. v
