The objective of this paper was to clarify the molecular bases of the internal mechanisms leading to the imbalance of generation of free radicals and antioxidant defenses of renal tissue in patients suffering from irreversible loss of renal function. Recent advances in this field may have great implications on the antioxidant therapy to be applied to these patients
