MENDOZA COUSSETTE, Ulises; GARCIA PINEIRO, . José Carlos; GASTELL, Pedro Luis y ARMENTEROS, Armando Amador. Xanthine oxidoreductase. properties, functions and regulation of its genetic expression. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2005, vol.24, n.2. ISSN 0864-0300.
A review of Xanthine oxidoreductase, which is a molibdoflavoenzyme largely distributed in differents species from bacteria to man, was made. It has been studied for its connection with the production of reactive oxygen species, a phenomenon involved in the oxidative damage present in different pathological states. Its structure, properties, genetics, distribution, main functions, regulation and pathological states, where an increase of its activity has been detected, were dealt with. There is special interest in it due to its low levels of activity as a result of its structural particularities, and to the recent discovery of the participation of DNA binding proteins in the regulation of the expression of its gene, in whose promoter there have been detected binding sites to these proteins. The induction of the synthesis of this enzyme by inflammatory cytokines and the detection of an increase of its activity during the myocardial damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion, and in other tissues, support the hypothesis of its participation in the tissular injury by oxidative stress.
