Resumo

A descriptive study was undertaken among all the elderly workers of the hospital (135). A survey was done to know about their chronic diseases: diabetes mellitus, asthma, arterial hypertension, among others, and smoking habit. Their nutritional status was evaluated by calculating weight, height and body mass index. The independence significance test was made by using x2 with a p < 0.05. There was a higher percentage of workers aged 60-69 (70.4 %). It was observed a predominance of workers with chronic diseases (62.2 %). The most frequent were hypertension (75 %), diabetes mellitus (27,4 %) and bronchial asthma (20,4 %). Of the workers with hyperlipoproteinemia, 86.7 % were overweight. This nutritional state accounted for 60.9 % of the diabetics and 60.4 % of the hypertensives. 23 % were smokers.
