HERNANDEZ HERNANDEZ, Aymeé. Contribution of electrophsyiology to the differential diagnosis between Guillain Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinizating polyneuroradiculopathy. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2008, vol.27, n.3-4. ISSN 0864-0300.
INTRODUCTION: The Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) and the chronic inflammatory demyelinizating polyneuroradiculopathy (CIDP) share similarities. One differ from the other in their beginning, course, evolution, prognosis and response to the treatment, but there are difficulties for their differentiation in the clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: To compare the alteration patterns of the electrophysiological studies in patients with GBS and CIDP to look for differences between them in order to have a tool contributing to the differential diagnosis of both diseases. METHODS: 18 patients with GBS and 27 with CIDP, who underwent conduction study and wave F were studied. RESULTS: significant differences existed among the evaluated variables in these studies in both groups of illnesses. It was demonstrated that in both groups there exists affectation of the motor fibers, and that it is higher from the sensitive point of view in the CIDP. The electrophysiological affectation pattern was different in both illnesses. CONCLUSIONS: GBS can be differentiated from the CIDP through the nervous conduction study and the F. wave
