HEREDIA RUIZ, Danay; FERNANDEZ CARABALLO, Douglas; ALFONSO RODRIGUEZ, Jesús e BALLESTEROS HERNANDEZ, Marianela. Oxidative stress in hypertension-related renal failure. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2012, vol.31, n.1, pp.16-25. ISSN 0864-0300.
In recent years oxidative stress has been viewed as one more of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of progressive chronic renal failure, alongside more “classical” causes, such as anemia, hypertension and diabetes. In fact oxidative stress has been identified as an important pathological mediator in a large number and variety of clinical situations, namely carcinogenesis, arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases and aging. This seems to be due to a multiplicity of factors including an increase in the production of oxidative metabolism substances and/or a decrease in antioxidant defenses. An updated review is conducted on the topic to identify the changes caused by oxidative stress in hypertension-related renal failure, paying special attention to the serious alterations in kidney function brought about by free radicals.
