A retrospective study was carried out in connection with the participation of the nurse in the Program for the Early Diagnosis of Cervix Cancer in the "Julian Grimau García" health area during 1993. Of the 3 881 Pap smears made, 100 proved to be not useful. The results obtained showed that the highest incidence of unuseful Pap smears was found among women aged 30-34, and that the most frequent causes were massive leucocytosis and the superficial sample taking. Most of the patients visited the hospital to undergo the test again, which showed the outstanding work carried out by the nurse through home visits and talks about health education, among other activities. Nurses also updated the cards and maintained them in optiomal conditions.
