A lenghtwise descriptive research study on the influence of the nursing staff on the control of hypertensive patient and is risk factors was carried out for 5 years (1993-1997) in the health area of "Pedro Borrás Astorga" Polyclinics in Pinar del Rio municipality, with the objective of assessing the effectiveness of educational-sanitary actions in this group of sick people from 10 physician´s offices. 383 of 3 467 registered patients in this health area were studied, who were twice visited at home by the researchers. The first visit was to survey the patient and his/her closest relatives and give them sanitary education whereas the second one was to survey them again and evaluate the results of the educational work carried out. It was observed that risk factors such as smoking was reduced in some patients and totally eliminated in others; similarly, obesity was decreased by using controlled diet and increased physical activity, and anti-stress mechanism improved. As to the behaviour of patients in dealing with their disease, they managed to better understand it and control it. There were higher rates of attendance to medical control visits and of compliance with the treatment, so the influence of the nursing staff and the effectiveness of actions taken were proved since they made it possible to attain positive changes in the control of blood hypertension.
