AMARO CANO, María del Carmen. Mary O´Donnell, la fundadora de las escuelas de enfermeras en Cuba. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.1, pp. 60-64. ISSN 1561-2961.

Mary Agnes O’Donnell is maybe the most known name among Cuban nurses at present. Nowadays, there is still a nursing polytechnic that bears her name and it is precisely the inheritor of the first Nursing School founded in Cuba by this admirable American nurse, in 1899. A year later, she was appointed General Inspector of the Nursing Schools in the country by the Executive Committee of the Welfare Board. She held this post together with that of Superintendent of the School of "Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes" Hospital. Once the Republic was established, she decided to stay in Cuba to continue her teaching and managerial work in the field of nursing. Among the numerous activities carried out by her in favor of the development of Cuban nursing, we can stress that in 1924 she was elected delegate at "La Esperanza" Sanatorium to make preparations and collect funds for the celebration, for the first time in Cuba, of Nurse’s Day, on June 3rd. Mary O’Donnell died on May 23rd, 1938, in New York, U.S.A.
