Prevention is one of the most useful and beautiful tasks that health workers may accomplish, specially if it is directed to toxic habits, such as smoking and alcoholism, whose addicts increase year after year. The main objective of this paper was to determine the criteria for an early intervention in the prevention of toxic habits since childhood. A longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted among children from 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades at "Conrado Benítez" Elementary School located in the capital of Pinar del Río province, from January to June, 1999. Knowing how useful health promotion is in the dissemination and gathering of information by the human groups, it was applied a methodology with participative techniques conviniently structured to be used in the prevention of toxic habits among school children aged 6-9. 2 groups from each grade were randomly selected for the study group and they were trained to utilize the designed methodology. It proved to be very useful to give information to these school children. The avant-garde position of parents, the TV and teachers was significant, in spite of the few activities they carried out. Physicians and the radio left behind. That’s why, medical advice is very important for school children to prevent toxic habits with participative techniques through the designed methodology. These results were compared with Fischer’s test and analyzed to be represented in tables later.
