MEGRET CABALLERO, Ana; NARANJO ARROYO, Migdalia and FONG GONZALEZ, Yoandra. Educación a familiares sobre el manejo del adulto mayor dependiente. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2002, vol.18, n.1, pp.43-49. ISSN 0864-0319.
Individual aging is not a phenomenum inherent to the modern societies since it has been present in all the ages and is a matter of interest for philosophy, art and medicine. An intervention study was conducted on the families of 102 older dependent patients from January to December ,1999. Those patients were seen at "Frank País" polyclinics. The general objective of the study was to teach families how to manage dependent older adults , and its specific objectives were to characterize the studied sample, inform the families about the general care of the dependent elderly and the caregiver, and compare the knowledge before and after the intervention. The universe of study was made up of 394 older adults and a sample of 62 patients assessed by the Multidisciplinary Team for Geriatric Care was finally taken. An initial survey was applied to find out the level of knowledge and a final one to verify the results of the intervention. Most of the patients assessed from the functional viewpoint at level 1 were females aged 65 years and over and the most frequent disturbances were strokes, senile dementia, hip fracture and blood hypertension. Therefore, it is possible and necessary to educate families in the good management of the elderly.
