A descriptive cross-sectional study of 226 old people from the people´s council of Belén in Habana Vieja municipality was performed in the first semester of 1999, in which a survey was administered on the elder abuse. The younger old people were the most maltreated and subjected mainly to social, psychological and family abuse. The eldest was less subjected to physical and economic abuse. Men were the most ill-treated and family was the one that maltreated the elderly the most from the psychological viewpoint whereas non-relatives abused them more but from the social viewpoint. The majority of the surveyed sample suggested that older people abuse should be avoided by denouncing it to the police, promoting respect to the elderly in schools and within the family and making it public in the most important mass media.
