Abstract

Breast is not only a female aesthetic organ but an important gland involved in breast-feeding. We may state that breast cancer is at present a permanent concern for women. A retrospective, prospective and longitudinal study of benign and malignant breast tumors was made on 132 patients, who were operated on in "Dr Mario Muñoz Monroy" hospital in Colon municipality, Matanzas province in the year 1999. The objective was to assess the surgical results; the variables such as age, location, diagnosis, educational level were taken from the medical histories and an interview designed for this purpose; data were processed later on by the percent method and the final results were the following: The highest percent of patients was aged 35-40 years, breast dysplasia was the predominant lesion followed by fibroadenoma, external upper quadrant was the most frequent location and the right breast was the most affected. The mastectomized patients were classified into clinical stage I and psychological support by the physician and the nurse was positive.
