A descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted among 90 elderly subjects. A sample of the total of 64 members of the grandparents' circles living in the community of Pastorita neighborhood, in Santiago de Cuba, during the trimester October-December, 1999, was taken. A series of social factors and their influence on third age were thoroughly analyzed. It was concluded that 100 % of the surveyed elderly take part in different activities at home. Despite the common belief that in the contemporary society the elderly has been abondoned by his family, our paper shows that most of them live with his relatives. 87.5 % did not suffer any crisis as a result of retirement, since they found well-being and stimulation in other daily activities. To prove the existance of these factors, the grandparents were visited anad surveyed at the grandparents' circle and at home to collect.and process data.
