A descriptive and prospective study of 117 patients having accidents due to various causes was carried out. 26 patients that suffered from encephalic traumatist and that were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of "José Luis Miranda" Pediatric Teaching Hospital, in Villa Clara, during 1998, were taken as a sample. A model was made to register the variables of interest for the study taken from the medical histories: age, sex, form of admission in the ICU, length of stay, physiopathological forms of trauma, mechanical ventilation, diagnosis, nursing actions and evaluation of nursing care. The results were shown in tables by means of the percentage method. They were processed in a microcomputer by using the EPINFO statistical program of the Analysis module. The nursing care process evaluation was processed according to Galsgow's scale. 61.5 % of the patients were between 5 and 10 years old. Most of them were males. 92.30 % of the patients had a favorable evolution. Brain concussion and brain contusion are the most common physiopathological forms of cranioencephalic traumatism, mainly at preschool age. The emergency service was the first link of attention. The mechanical ventilation is important for the treatment of severe hypoxia, but it is not the election treatment of these children. The nursing care process as a scientifc method allowed to provide specific care to these patients with a high quality degree.
