A retrospective descriptive study was performed to determine the situation of smoking and alcoholism in family physician's office # 13, Area IV, located in Pueblo Griffo, Cienfuegos municipality. The universe of study was made up of 44 patients who smoked and took alcohol throughout 1999, which accounted for 100%. The research work was carried out from January to March 2000. For data gathering, the family records were reviewed and on the basis of a questionnaire, the following variables were examined: age, sex, educational level, occupation, toxic habits, etc. Males, 40-49 y age group, high-school educational level and blue workers prevailed. The number of smokers exceeded that of alcohol consumers. Hypertension was the only tobacco-associated illness whereas duodenal ulcer and epilepsy among others were related to alcohol consumption.
