The present paper covers the results of a prospective and observational study that was conducted in "Eusebio Hernández" teaching gynecological and obstetric hospital during July and August, 1997 and later in "26 de Julio" teaching polyclinics during January and February, 1998. The purpose of the study was the expectations of puerperas and pregnant women about the use of lactational amenorrhea as a contraceptive method and their opinions and knowledge about it. The lactational amenorrhea method is a contraceptive resource that is used to keep the infertility condition resulting from intensive breast-feeding patterns. This paper showed, as the main result, the lack of information on the referred method as a contraceptive means; it was also demonstrated that the health care personnel and the media did not play their educational role in this regard, so the possibility of promoting effective and safe family planning and of promoting more effectively exclusive breast-feeding was wasted.
