ROSABAL SUAREZ, Laritza  and  PIEDRA COSME, Belkis. Intervención de enfermería para la capacitación sobre lactancia materna. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2004, vol.20, n.1, pp.1-1. ISSN 0864-0319.

According to the World Health Organization, over one million children could be saved yearly if all mothers could breast-feed their children exclusively during the first six months of their life. An intervention study was carried out in the maternal home in Baraguá, health area Baraguá, municipality of Mella in Santiago de Cuba province, with the objective of expanding knowledge on breast feeding among the patients living in the above-mentioned place. The universe of study was composed of 12 women admitted in January,2003. The level of knowledge on breast-feeding according to the age and the schooling level was determined before carrying out the training intervention. The women with highest knowledge about this tope ranged from 20 to 35 years for 75% whereas those with less knowledge included women aged under 20 and over 35 years. According to the schooling level, 50% of the patients having more knowledge have approved high school studies, and before the training activity, 66% knew about the advantages of breast feeding, how to have enough milk for the baby and the most frequent positions to breast-feed. At the end of the intervention, all the patients had been trained in breast-feeding.
