Abstract

Socioeconomic characterization of the elderly from 2 family physicians' offices of “San Diego de los Baños” Polyclinic. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.1. ISSN 0864-0319.

A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted aimed at characterizing from the socioeconomic point of view the population aged 60 and over from 2 family physicians' offices of “San Diego de los Baños” during June 2004. A sample of 80 aged individuals was selected at random from a total of 164 persons. A questionnaire was used to collect all the data of interest. 56.2 % of the elderly were active. Most of them were males and from the rural sector. The most common occupational category was peasant, with predominance in the age group 60-79. 50.0 % of the older adults received their incomes as retired. In the category of workers, women prevailed over men. 67.5 % of the elderly had their basic needs met, but with a few possibilities of devoting resources to recreation and leisure activities. Only 11.3 % were able to meet all their needs. It was concluded that eventhough a high percentage of the aged persons met their basic needs with their incomes, just a few met their basic needs and others to live satisfactorily, regardless their urban or rural origin.
