Background: within the health care program for the retired and pensioned of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, the guidance and training received by those workers next to retirement through preretirement courses are very important. Objectives: To determine if the nursing personnel from a second level hospital has a life project after their retirement and its associated characteristics. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken among 222 nurses aged 38-56 of the Regional Hospital No. 25 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security with 20 or more years of working experience that volunteered to participate in this study. The sample was composed of 126 women who answered a questionnaire of 18 questions. The results were expressed in absolute and relative values. Results: mean age was 45.75 years old and the predominating category was that of Nursing Assistant. 77.56 % referred having a life project after retirement to live in a way that allows them to maintain and preserve their health and well-being. 95.51 % of the nurses had heard about the preretirement course, but only 24.16 % knew its content and the place where it would be conducted. The main activities planned to be carried out after retirement were related to culture and recreation. 44.23 % fo the nurses have started these activities in some way, whereas only a few of them had saved money to this end. Conclusions: nurses in general know what a life project is, but there is a poor economic preparation to face the retirement process and to develop such projects. A greater spreading of the content of the course is necessary to attain a better preparation of the workers in connection with the new role they should play after retirement.
