Resumen

HERNANDEZ VALDEZ, Emma et al. Educative intervention to increase the knowledge on biosafety in the nursing staff of a hospital. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.2. ISSN 0864-0319.

An educative intervention was conducted to increase the level of knowledge on biosafety of the nursing staff of the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. The universe was composed of 103 nurses, to whom an initial or diagnostic survey was applied to identify their knowledge on biosafety. Afterwards, a teaching educational program was designed according to the learning needs identified. Three groups were organized to guarantee feasibility with a 16- hour-teaching program of 8 weeks for each group. Finally, the initial survey was applied again to assess the impact of the teaching activities. As a result of the diagnostic survey, it was found that 100 % of the nursing staff are exposed to a biological risk, and that something more than a half (55.3 %) are exposed to a double risk (biological-radiological). Before the intervention, there was little knowledge of the universal precautions on biosafety (35.0 %), on the management of blood samples (19.4 %), dirty clothes (17.4 %), and sharp objects (23.3 %). After this procedure, 100 % of the staff had acquired knowledge on the explored indicators. It was concluded that the intervention project was effective, since it was possible to increase the level of knowledge of biosafety among the nursing staff from the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery.
