Abstract

Purpose and methodology: Was realized a descriptive, correlational, and comparative study to identify the association between dissatisfaction with the body shape and body mass index in adolescents. The sample was conformed for 231 students of the elementary school public in Fresnillo, Zacatecas city in Mexico. To measure the dissatisfaction with the body shape was applied the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ -34).Results: The 44.8% from the sample was men and 54.7% was women, with an average age of 13.6 years old (ST =.93). The 81.8% from the adolescents didn't show dissatisfaction with their body shape, 17.7% showed a low dissatisfaction and .5% showed moderated dissatisfaction. The combined prevalence of overweight and obesity was 32%. Was found a positive and significant correlation between body mass index and dissatisfaction with the body shape (rs = .22, p =.001), the dissatisfaction with the body shape was bigger in women than in men (U = 4335.00, p < .01). There wasn't significative differences with the dissatisfaction according to the age (H = .31, p > .05). When was selected only adolescents with overweight or obesity and compared the dissatisfaction with the body shape according to the gender was found a bigger dissatisfaction in women than in men (U = 374.00, p = .001). When was separated the adolescents by gender, was found in women with a bigger body mass index a high level of dissatisfaction with the body shape (H = 8.56, p = .03), opposite to the men where there wasn't significative differences (H = 5.77, p = 12). Conclusion: The body mass index is a factor associated to the dissatisfaction with the body shape. The adolescents with a bigger body mass index and female gender are more susceptible to feel dissatisfaction with the body shape.
