This is a Cross-sectional and prospective study that aimed to identify risk factors for the occurrence of a perioperative positioning injury in patients undergoing surgical procedures in the surgical center. The sample consisted of 50 patients subjected to surgery under general anesthesia and spinal or epidural, during the period September to November of 2008. All data were collected through assessments of the conditions of the skin of the patient, to be received in surgical center and immediately after the anesthetic-surgical procedure. We found that 37 (74.00 %) patients had skin lesions of grade I, at the end of surgery. The average length of time of surgery was 122.08 minutes, 25 (50.00%) adopted the supine position; the Body Mass Index (BMI) was 29.64 kg / m²; 48 (96.00 %) used only a electrocautery (2.00 %) used for protective placement. The low use of protectors and supports for positioning surgical, non-specific uses of protective maintenance of body temperature, prolonged surgical time, overweight and obesity were the main risk factors identified for the appearance of lesions in patients. The findings suggest the need for development and implementation of protocols for injury prevention for perioperative positioning this service.
