The humanist, social, psychological and scientific unlimited reach which distinguishes nursing, makes think that for the nursing development is essential a philosophical, conceptual and theoretical basement which facilitates the practical performance of this discipline in the research, educational, administrative and clinical fields. Examining some of the nursing theories obviously arises that the care given to certain groups of patients could be improved if some nursing models are used. Due to the complexity of caring and the increment of patients suffering any end stage renal disease this article is intends to highlight the validity and the importance of the application of some nursing model and theories in caring for the renal patient in the Cuban context. A documental analysis of the literature was carried out, including different text books, monographies, revision and original articles from updated journals and expert persons on this thematic were consulted to enlarge the knowledge related to nursing models and theories applied in the practice of this group of professionals. Application of philosophical basis and nursing theories in the clinical practice of this discipline is definitely possible; it just not constitutes a perfection instrument of the patient care, it also allows a wider, deeper and extended vision of nursing which opens the way to excellence in the patient care. Nursing care given to renal patients could be improved if some of the nursing models are used.
