Abstract

RODRIGUEZ WASHINGTON, Noralydis; LOZANO LEFRAN, Anabel  and  CHAO FLORES, Marianela. Gender construction in childhood from a literary perspective. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.3, pp.182-190. ISSN 0864-0319.

Introduction: Led by the Cuban Network of Child Health Nursing in conjunction with the Cuban Network of Gender and Collective Health, José Martí Pioneer Organization and the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana, a participative action study was carried out to characterize the gender approach followed by children in their daily lives. Hence the title "Eyeglasses for gender". Methods: A workshop was conducted with 16 children selected by intentional sampling, 8 male and 8 female, aged 9 and 10, from Felipe Poey Aloy school, municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, from June to November 2012. The purpose was to characterize the gender representations built by children in their literary production. Results: On the basis of texts created by children (short stories, comic strips, curiosities) identification was made of the influence of both the family and school in the building of gender identity. Conclusions: The gender representations built by children are influenced by the stereotypes established by society. Evidence was found of the acceptance to assume an equitable role distribution. In the context of the family, persistence was observed of the roles traditionally assigned to mothers and fathers. Though there is a certain tendency to share the housework, women continue to be overloaded with house chores.

Keywords : gender; stereotypes; gender roles; literature; childhood.
