Abstract

Introduction: The scarce development and application of health systems and services research results by nursing professionals stem from several factors, among them unawareness of its historical and conceptual background, which also hampers its understanding. Objective: Systematize information about the history of health systems and services research. Methods: A bibliographic and documentary review was conducted. Conclusions: Knowledge about systems and services research referents by nursing professionals facilitates their research work by providing them with awareness of the integration of disciplines and methods, and of the level of population analysis required.
